Though as derivative this movie is, it could all the same been a lot of fun in the right hands, but the movie ends up being kind of flat. One of the biggest problems with the movie is the direction by Daniel Mann. The movie is lacking grit and the necessary hard edge a revenge western really needs.

The film, which got mixed reviews, was a box office bomb. Judith Crist of New York magazine offered that the film was "another kind of high-class trash ... with William Holden as a proud rancher out to get the villains..."
The screenplay may have undergone a lot of changes, as time lapses in the story are awkwardly handled. One is covered by expository voiceovers as the Revengers ride in long shot. John Benedict's tregua with Susan Hayward slows the movie down long enough to introduce a sentimental aspect before the big finish. Hayward's Irish accent disappears ...
Oct 6, 2019 · Review: The film offers a well-done climatic Indian attack on a cavalry encampment and a chance to see Susan Hayward in her final film, but little else. There’s a dash of “Dirty Dozen,” a bit of comedy, lots of tough talk and a nearly invincible seven, but it never really gels into anything above an average Western revenge flick.
