The founder of the Green Belt Movement, which has planted 30 million trees, she was the first woman in east or central Africa to earn a Ph.D. She was deputy minister in the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Wildlife 2003–05. Nobel Peace Prize (2004).
