He then married actress Stefanie Powers in 1973, but they divorced in 1977. His third marriage was to actress Ardis Ankerson in 1979, and they remained married until his death in 1981. Holden died on November 16, 1981 in Santa Monica, California. He was 63 years old. He was survived by his third wife, Ardis, and his two children, Scott and Peter.
