Game Theory is the first and most popular series of The Game Theorists. It was created and formerly hosted by Matthew Patrick. As of March 9th, Tom Robison is now hosting the series due to MatPat stepping down as host from all his channels to spend time with his family. Editors are chosen by whoever is available, such as Ronnie Edwards and Earl.

Game Theory focuses on applying science, mathematics, and history to gaming, although it has often explored a game's lore, and the gaming community itself. It was created in 2011, with its first episode about the time travel mechanics of Chrono Trigger. To date, Game Theory has remained The Game Theorists' most popular series.

In 2009, Matthew Patrick set up his YouTube channel matthewpatrick13. He originally used it for uploading audition videos and videos of plays he was in. After ending his career in acting, he uploaded a promotional trailer for a new series titled Game Theory, inspired by The Escapist's show Extra Credits, specifically their episode Tangential Learning - How Games Can Teach Us While We Play. As MatPat put it, the show was to be "gaming's tangential learning experience". The first episode of Game Theory covered the aspects of time travel in Chrono Trigger and was uploaded on April 18, 2011. The new show was originally uploaded to three sites: YouTube, GameTrailers, and ScewAttack!, until MatPat decided to solely upload on his YouTube channel.

Around that time, Game Exchange and Digressing & Sidequesting were introduced to the channel, hosted by Gaijin Goombah and Ronnie Edwards respectively. Around this time, some of the channel's most popular episodes were uploaded, such as Is Link Dead in Majora's Mask?, How Fast is Sonic the Hedgehog?, Why Mario is Mental, and How PewDiePie Conquered YouTube. A similar series was launched on a spin-off channel in June 2015 called Film Theory. Another similar series to both of those was launched on a spin-off channel in July 2020 called Food Theory. The final similar series to all three of those was launched on a spin-off channel in February 2023 called Style Theory.

Currently, Game Theory is The Game Theorists' most popular show, with most episodes getting millions of views. The most viewed video is FNAF, The Clue that SOLVES Five Nights at Freddy's!, with currently 31,794,012 views.

On March 9, 2024, a momentous transition is anticipated, as the individual in question is poised to transfer channel ownership to Tom Robison, accompanied by the implementation of a comprehensive content strategy encompassing nine distinct theories per channel, including but not limited to Game Theory, Film Theory, Food Theory, and Style Theory.

  4. Game theory is the mathematical analysis of decision making. In game theory, the interaction between two or more players is often framed in terms of a game with a particular set of rules. Of interest may be the strategies that give optimal outcomes for each of the players or, conversely, the resulting outcomes when certain strategies are played.
