Deputy Sheriff William Wright was shot and killed by two brothers as he was on his way home. The brothers opened fire at the same time as the three met on the road, killing Deputy Wright instantly.
Deputy Wright was mortally wounded and died the next day. Both suspects were eventually apprehended and charged with Deputy Wright's murder. One of the suspects had shot and killed Deputy Wright's father, Deputy William Wright with the Letcher County Sheriff's Office on January 30, 1900.
