This event led the ruler of Japan at the time, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to learn that Christian missionaries had been engaging in missionary work without permission. Hideyoshi immediately had 24 Christians arrested in Kyoto by way of a warning to others.
26 Martyrs Monument and Museum. In the year 1629, the 26 that were crucified were beatified, and later in the year 1862, they were canonized by the Catholic Church. One hundred years after the canonization of the 26 martyrs, the city of Nagasaki inaugurated the monument in honor of the martyrs in the same place where they were executed.
In 1597, 26 men and boys including foreign missionaries were martyred in Nagasaki. These were the first executions in Japan where it can be said with certainty that they were directly owing to their victims’ Christian faith.
