The Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey is an abbey located within the city and island of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, in the department of Manche. The abbey is an essential part of the structural composition of the town the feudal society constructed.
The Abbey. Constructed from the 10th century, the Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel houses architectural treasures in Carolingian, Romanesque, and Gothic styles. It is divided into two main parts: the abbey church, located at the top of the Mont’s rock, and the Marvel (La Merveille), which rises on three levels on the side of the rock.
Mont Saint-Michel Abbey will be open from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm, last admission (tickets only available on site on the day). Crowning a granite islet in the heart of the bay, the site of the highest tides in Europe, the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel was first a famous monastery, then an unspoiled fortress and a fearsome prison.

The abbey became a "central house" in the 19th century, and most of its spaces were completely refurbished in order to accommodate the greatest number of common law and political prisoners. Among its illustrious prisoners, the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel counts Armand Barbès and Auguste Blanqui, fierce opponents of the July monarchy.
Brief description. Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides, at the limit between Normandy and Brittany, stands “Wonder of the West”, a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the Archangel St Michel, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its walls.
