Born on 18 December 1418, Albrecht was the second son of Duke Ernst of Styria and his second wife Cymburgis of Masovia. After the early death of his father he grew up together with his elder brother Frederick in Innsbruck under the guardianship of their uncle, Duke Frederick IV of Tyrol.

Albrecht VI. (Arch-) Duke of Austria; ruler of Upper Austria from 1457, from 1462 also of Lower Austria. Born in Vienna on 18 December 1418. Died in Vienna on 2 December 1463. The son of Ernest ‘the Iron’, he ruled over the Habsburg Swabian territories from 1446, but demanded a greater share of power from his brother, Emperor Frederick III.
After laying siege to Frederick in the Vienna Hofburg, he also took over the reign of Austria below the Enns (now Lower Austria) in 1462. Albert however died childless the next year and all his lands fell back to his elder brother. In 1452 Albert had married Mechthild of the Palatinate, daughter of Count Palatine Louis III.
