Definition. Anti-Federalists were those who opposed the creation of a stronger U.S. federal government and which later opposed the ratification of the 1787 Constitution.
For the Antifederalists, a responsible representative—the essential characteristic of republicanism—was constitutionally obliged to be responsive to the sovereign people. Ultimately, the “accountability” of the representative was secured by “rotation in office,” the vital principle of representative democracy.
