Feb 14, 2024 · Maine’s capital city of Augusta might not be a big town, but you’ll find plenty of fun things to do in Augusta to keep you busy. Whether you want to go for a walk along the river or find a great place to eat, you’ll be able to do that here.
- Maine State Museum. The Maine State Museum has a fascinating history, and I’m excited to share it with you. The museum, which is currently open, first opened its doors in 1836, showcasing geological and biological exhibits.
- Fort Western. Fort Western, a remarkable National Historical Monument located on the banks of the Kennebec River in Augusta. This wooden fortress was constructed in 1754, during the tumultuous period of the French and Indian War.
- Viles Arboretum. Step into the serene beauty of Viles Arboretum, a sprawling 220-acre site that invites you to wander through its enchanting forests and gardens.
- The Governor Hill Mansion. The Governor Hill Mansion, which now serves as an event facility, has a rich history dating back to 1902 when it was constructed as the residence for the State Governor.
- Visit the Maine State Capitol Building. Perched atop Weston's Hill, overlooking Capitol Park, sits Maine's domed State House. Surrounded by lovely manicured grounds, this building was finished in 1832, just a year after the city was declared the new home of the state government.
- Spot the Museum in the Streets. From early spring through late autumn, Augusta has several Museum in the Streets stations where tourists can learn more about significant historic places and events.

- Explore Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead. This 197-acre nature preserve offers forested areas, pastures, and a lovely brook adorned with stone bridges, as well as the historic Vaughan Homestead, which was built in the late 18 century.

Aug 6, 2023 · 55. State Parks. Our grounds and trails are open every day of the year from Sunrise to Sunset. Please refer to our website for our Visitor Center Hours. Over 200 labeled species of trees, shrubs and "Space Trees" (from seed that traveled on the Space Shuttle) are on display at this 224-acre garden.
