Always Sunny closed out its 10th season the way it ended last year's run - with Mac and Dennis' apartment on fire. Despite that cyclical appeal though, "Ass Kickers United" didn't exactly deliver like some of the other episodes did these past few months.
I'll tell you what did work however. Dennis's demented mind going from logical to murderous in the blink of an eye. More maniac than man these days, there are still glimpses of old Dennis occasionally. The logical guy who can see through, and balance out, the rest of the Gang's insanity. He was smart enough to know that Mac and Charlie had to be eased into something as big as rebuilding an entire apartment. But once his pride was on the line, and the contest with Dee and Frank got serious, he immediately (as the secret "master" of the cult) ordered all members to light themselves on fire.
So reasonable-yet-manipulative Dennis switched over to "kill yourselves for me" Dennis in a heartbeat. And it's in moments like these that the character truly shines. Moments when, despite everyone else's petty insanity, he can still stand out as the true dark psycho. And poor Jojo (paint chip-eating guest start Dax Shepard) paid the price for it. And before any of us could wonder if Jojo really died or if he just wound up crispy like Cricket, we got to see him astride a galactic sea turtle. Or, Lord Zolo's mothership, I assume.
Mac and Dennis cramming themselves, and their lunacy, into Dee's apartment became a running theme this season. So it was fitting to have it be a part of the season ender. As was everything going up in flames, just like last year. But not every joke landed and Frank's side of things didn't quite pop. The best part of this finale, basically, was the ...
