Jan 1, 2023 · Best Time To Hike Mount Whitney. May 1st - November 1st is the timeframe when permits are required to be on this trail. Whether you’re doing it as a day hike or an overnight. Outside of those dates, the only permit you’ll need is a wilderness permit.
You must obtain your wilderness permit from one of the Inyo National Forest Visitor Centers. Trips that begin in the Mt Whitney Zone must be issued at Eastern Sierra InterAgency Visitor Center. We recommend you pick up your wilderness permit from the location closest to your entry trail.
