     TLDR Change the gradle wrapper version to 4.7 or higher, by changing the file gradle-wrapper.properties in ovr_sdk_mobile_***/gradle/wrapper

     Details

     When building a project that uses the Oculus VR Api, it runs VrApp.gradle, which in turn runs a python script. This python script fails, and this is where the error comes from. The python script that is run is bin/scripts/ovrbuild_sklibs.py, which in turn runs ovrbuild.py, which in turn seems to run a different gradle file. Anyway, the error output that is interesting for us is the err in the call function in ovrbuild.py. The print statement is swallowed by android studio, so either you would have to run gradle from the command line somehow (I guess, but I don't know gradle very well), but I just saved the error to file by editing the python script. The error message is

     FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.-* What went wrong:Could not determine java version from '11.0.2'.-* Try:Run with --stacktrace option to get the stack trace. Run with --info or --debug option to get more log output. Run with --scan to get full insights.-* Get more help at https://help.gradle.org-

     This seems to be a well known error, that comes from the fact that somewhere between java 9 and 11, the format of java -version changed (see https://github.com/facebook/react-native/issues/22487), and gradle was unable to detect it for a while. However, it was patched in version 4.7, so for me the solution was to change the gradle wrapper version to a higher version (NOT the gradle version in android studio, but the one specified in gradle-wrapper.properties). I have no idea why this error suddenly appeared for me, but probably my java version must somehow have updated without me noticing.

     edit: as comments point out, change to 4.8 or higher, I wrote 4.7 because that is what they said in the online source, but perhaps it was not patched in 4.7000 but some other version 4.7xxx

     I'm a core developer of Kivy, which has been mentioned in some of the other answers. I think it's the main option you have for making python apps for android, and it has both advantages and disadvantages.

     The main technical disadvantages are (both in my opinion and I think the main problems I see people raise):

     • Startup speed: if the app isn't already running it takes a short time to spin up the python interpreter, up to a few seconds on older devices (or much longer if you code some things badly but that's avoidable), during which time a loading screen is displayed.
     • Lack of native look and feel: Kivy is its own opengl-based graphical framework, so it doesn't look like default android apps (it's customisable but still very hard to perfectly emulate something like that)
     • APK size: Because you have to package the python interpreter, the minimum apk size is about 7MB.

     Ther are other potential disadvantages, such as the standard non-java problem of having to catch up the android api when it changes, but I consider these more minor issues, e.g. in this case since you can actually call much of the java api directly from python with pyjnius. I have a blog post about this. Another problem is that kivy's community is small compared to that of the java app community, though it's also quite active.

     For some people, one or more of these are immediate or eventual barriers to using Kivy. For others they don't matter or are outweighed by the advantages, and for these reasons there are people using Kivy commercially on Android (and iOS). Personally I'm most interested in the wide space between 'I wrote a simple script' and 'I made a big polished android app', because I think it should be easier than it currently is to bundle simple things as simple apps, but that's just my own reason for using kivy.

     The person who made the tutorial is using PyCharm, not Android studio.

     PyCharm is the python version of Intellij (both developed by JetBrains), on which Android Studio is largely based, hence they look so much alike.

     You cannot do python for android in Android Studio.

     Essentially there are three things you can do:

     • If you just want simple Android lists and inputs, such as getting a user's input (e.g., a username and password) or showing a list of option to choose from, then there are some tutorials here: http://code.google.com/p/android-scripting/wiki/UiExamples
     • If you want to show information (i.e., not have the user select it), you could try showing HTML in a WebView and respond via events: http://code.google.com/p/android-scripting/wiki/UsingWebViewDoing this, you get limited functionality via events by using droid.eventPost(eventName,eventData); in JavaScript and droid.eventWaitFor(eventName).result in Python. You can then do whatever you want with the received data.
     • If you're feeling brave, the latest unofficial release contains support for full Android layouts (ones made in XML, like those found in a native Android app). You can find a guide for that here: http://code.google.com/p/android-scripting/wiki/FullScreenUI

     All attribute access in Python is highly customizable, and this is just a feature dataclasses make use of.

     The easiest way to control attribute setting is to create a custom __setattr__ method in your class - if you want to be able to create attributes during __init__ one of the ways is to have an specific parameter to control whether each instance is frozen already, and freeze it at the end of __init__:
