Caroline Sturgis Tappan (August 30, 1818 – October 20, 1888), commonly known as Caroline Sturgis, or "Cary" Sturgis, was an American Transcendentalist poet and artist. [1] [2] [3] She is particularly known for her friendships and frequent correspondences with prominent American Transcendentalists, such as Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson .

Sep 15, 2016 · Tanglewood, now known as the Tappan House, was built by Caroline Sturgis Tappan in 1865. She purchased 210 acres with her husband, William Aspinwall Tappan, in 1849. A fireplace, with paintings by Ellen Tappan Dixey, greets visitors who enter the Tappan House, which serves as a visitors center for Tanglewood.
Born in 1819, Caroline "Carrie" Tappan grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, the fourth child in a family of five girls and one boy. Both of her parents were descended from old Cape Cod families. Her maternal grandfather John Davis was the U.S. district court judge for Massachusetts and the long-time president of the Massachusetts Historical Society.

Caroline Sturgis Tappan was a Transcendentalist poet and friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller.
