May 9, 2023 · Leonardo da Vinci’s mother, Caterina, was a peasant woman who married Piero da Vinci, a notary. She gave birth to Leonardo in 1452, and he was their first child. Many historians believe that the she is a portrait of Caterina, and that Leonardo painted it as a tribute to his mother.
He was born out of wedlock to Piero da Vinci (Ser Piero da Vinci d'Antonio di ser Piero di ser Guido; 1426–1504), a Florentine legal notary, and Caterina di Meo Lippi (c. 1434–1494), from the lower class.
