He was the sixth but second surviving son of Elector Augustus of Saxony and Anna of Denmark. The death of his older brother, Alexander (8 October 1565), made him the new heir apparent to the Electorate of Saxony. Christian succeeded his father when he died, in 1586. His chancellor was Nikolaus Krell.

Christian II died in Dresden on 23 July 1611; after having participated in a tournament in full armour, he climbed off his horse, drank a large amount of beer to cool down, and suddenly died from a heart attack. The pieces displayed here are thought to be part of a garniture commissioned by Elector August of Saxony (1526–1586) in 1582. Because of its slender proportions, the armor is assumed to have been ordered as a present for the elector’s son, Christian (1560–1591), who later succeeded his father as archduke and elector of Saxony.
