He was created 1st Lord Lorne [Scotland] on 17 April 1470, together with a conveyance to him of the lands of and lordship of Lorne, after the resignation of his wife's uncle, Walter Stewart as Lord Lorne (who was then created Lord Innermeath). He held the office of Hereditary Justiciary and Sheriff of the lordship of Lorne in 1471.

Colin Campbell was the grandson of the 1st Lord Campbell [S] (1445). Colin's elevation to earl (1458) was followed by a steady acquisition of lands and offices. Argyll combined the attributes of a shrewd royal councillor and the ambitions of an immensely powerful Highland clan chief.
The Earldom of Argyll was held by the 1st Marquess of Argyll from 15 Nov 1641 until his attainder and execution in 27 May 1661. In 1663 the late marquess's elder son, Archibald Campbell, was restored to the titles and estates of the family as Lord Campbell, Lorne and Kintyre and Earl of Argyll.
