Figlio dello scrittore Aleksandr Amfiteatrov, studiò a Praga e a Roma e fu direttore d'orchestra all'EIAR poi negli USA. Fu inoltre discreto compositore di colonne sonore. Suo fratello, Massimo Amfiteatrof, fu violoncellista d'eccezione.
