Dante's Inferno is a 1935 American drama horror film starring Spencer Tracy and loosely based on Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. The film remains primarily remembered for a 10-minute depiction of hell realised by director Harry Lachman , himself an established post-impressionist painter .

The dream sequence depicting hell is fantastic: the fog-soaked cave, twisted gothic trees, lines of the damned suffering, molten rain. Visually stunning and so different from the humdrum aesthetics of the rest of the film. In the film, Spencer Tracy plays a con-man who spices up a carnival show on Dante’s Inferno with lurid spectacle.
