Mar 1, 2024 · The independent label was conjured up using a Dungeons & Dragons character-name-generator computer program by Darius Van Arman during his college days at UVA. During this time Van Armen signed his friends bands to the small label and soon became met Secretly Canadian founder Chris Swanson. Their friendship became a monumental partnership that would one day become the start of Secretly Group.

Secretly Canadian, the first of the labels, was formed in 1996 by brothers Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill. Their first release was a re-issue of an album by June Panic. Weddle later left to form label Family Vineyard; the remaining trio were joined by Darius Van Arman, as well as his label Jagjaguwar, in 1999.
