  4. Excellent critic and analyst. Agree or disagree, he makes his cases citing musical examples, knows how to read a score, and is entertaining as hell. The claim that he is critical of all performance practices since the 1950s is belied by his advocacy of conductors like Charles Mackerras, Bruggen, and Harnoncourt.
