Just east of Peter Island and across Deadman’s Bay is Dead Chest Cay (or Island). Named for its coffin (called a “dead mans chest” by pirates) shaped profile when viewed from the northwest, it is where legend says that the infamous Blackbeard left 15 men stranded with only a bottle of rum.

The island is approximately 3/4 of an acre in size and consists of volcanic rock, meager and often parched vegetation and two narrow beaches on both the north and south sides.

Hence, the song “15 Men on a Dead Man’s Chest, Yo Ho Ho, and a Bottle of Rum.”. The island is an uninhabited National Park with three dive sites. They are Coral Gardens, Dead Chest West, and Painted Walls, which is one of the most photogenic dive sites in the BVI.
