Apr 14, 2021 · There are many reasons the Church requires a Catholic bride and groom to be married in a church. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says in paragraph #1631: “This is the reason why the Church normally requires that the faithful contract marriage according to the ecclesiastical form.
- Marriage is something given by God – Marriage is not a social construct or a romantic idea. Marriage is not a sentimental occasion or the chance for a great party.
- A Valid Marriage is Between one Man and one Woman – Marriage is forged from the natural order. Men and women fit together. They fit together to make love and make babies.
- Marriage is a lifetime commitment – For Catholics, marriage is for life. If you are validly married to a person you are married to that person until one of you dies.
- For a marriage to be valid the man and woman must both be free to marry – You can’t marry someone who is already married.
