Żagań ⓘ (French and German: Sagan, Upper Sorbian: Zahań, Latin: Saganum) is a town in western Poland, on the Bóbr river, with 25,731 inhabitants (2019). The town is the capital of Żagań County in the historic region of Silesia.
Balthasar of Żagań. Balthasar, Duke of Żagań ( Polish: Baltazar żagański; c. 1415 – Przewóz, 15 July 1472), was a Duke of Żagań - Przewóz since 1439 (with his brothers as co-rulers until 1449), from 1449 Duke of Żagań. Deposed during 1461–1468, he recovered the Duchy in this year until shortly before his death.
In 1628 the Żagań estate was purchased by Duke Albrecht Wallenstein from Ferdinand II, Emperor of Austria. The brilliant astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630), who formulated laws of planetary motion, came to Żagań at Wallenstein’s invitation, and though the latter was a forceful advocate of Catholicism, he was benevolently disposed towards the learned Evangelical.
The castle at Żagań became the residence of his youngest son Przemko, the first Duke of Żagań from 1278, who established a monastery of Augustinian Canons there. In 1284 he swapped his estates for the Duchy of Ścinawa and was succeeded by his elder brother Konrad II the Hunchback .
