Oct 24, 2023 · The film was dedicated to El Hedi ben Salem. Shortly after he finished filming it, Fassbinder died of a drug overdose at age 37. Forty years later, his name is forever engraved in the annals of cinematic greats, even as that of El Hedi ben Salem is largely forgotten.

El Hedi ben Salem is a Moroccan actor. He is best known as the lover and collaborator of provocative German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. He died of a heart attack while in prison. Fassbinder dedicated his last film, Querelle (1982), to Salem.
In June of 1982, Lorenz found Fassbinder dead in his room, a victim of intoxicants and overwork. QUERELLE was released posthumously a month later and the film was dedicated to El Hedi ben Salem. Fassbinder’s legacy is as complicated as his life.
