Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto (May 30, 1892 – April 24, 1972) was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. Nicknamed the "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art," [2] he was the first-ever to be recognized as a National Artist of the Philippines. [3]

Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto (1892-1972), Philippines' first National Artist in Painting (1972), the so-called "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art", Amorsolo earned a degree from the Liceo de Manila Art School in 1909 and entered the University of the Philippines' (UP) School of Fine Arts.
Renowned for his trademark luminosity and ability to render the iconic provincial Filipina, Amorsolo’s paintings usually feature scenes in glowing rural landscapes--- such as farmers ankle-deep in rice fields, women in colorful baro’t sayas sorting through mangoes, and vibrant society portraits.
Amorsolo painted many series of historical paintings depicting pre-Colonial, Spanish colonial, and wartime events, portraits of prominent politicians (e.g., General Emilio Aguinaldo), nudes, andthe dalagang Filipina (a tanned, clear-complexioned, slim, and soft-featured Philippine maiden).
