Fontana Records is a record label that was started in the 1950s as a subsidiary of the Dutch Philips Records. The independent label distributor Fontana Distribution takes its name from the label.
Wayne Fontana founded the band in June 1963 with Bob Lang, Ric Rothwell, and Eric Stewart. The name of the group was inspired by the title of a 1963 UK feature film, starring the British actor Dirk Bogarde, called The Mind Benders. Before that Fontana had a group called Wayne Fontana and the Jets (from July 1962).

In 1958 Philips created a subsidiary record label Fontana and appointed Jack Baverstock (who had worked for the New Musical Express and had assisted in introducing the Top Twenty charts to the UK), as the label’s A&R Manager. Jack had previously also produced discs for Oriole and Embassy Records.
The Manchester, UK-based group, Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders, came to the attention of U.S. record-buyers in 1965 with “Game of Love”.
