Watching your students struggle with reading comprehension is not easy. I hope my tips, suggestions, and reading comprehension activities for middle school students have provided you with some hope and inspiration. What are you most excited to try with your students?
- Map It! Challenge middle schoolers to draw a map of the assigned book. This could be a map of the world or of a bedroom, restaurant, or other location.
- Write a Letter To the Main Character. Pick a critical point in the story for your students and have them write a letter to the main character. This helps students practice summarizing and expressing their thoughts on certain characters.
- Utilize the Five Senses. Create experiences that engage the five senses. For taste, see if you can bring a significant treat from the book for your students to try.
- Imagine a Different Ending. This could be done as a class, in groups, or individually. After finishing a book, it’s worth discussing alternative endings.
- Charades. Charades is an activity that’s ready to shake off its dusty, Victorian-parlor-game status and take on new life in the classroom. For students who like to get up and move, acting can be the ideal way to demonstrate how well they understand the lesson.
- Line it Up. Retelling the sequence of events in a story is an essential way to measure story comprehension, and a little creativity can transform a boring recall activity into an interactive game.
- Picture Perfect. For students who are artistically inclined, drawing is an excellent way to demonstrate how well they understand a concept. Ask students to draw a picture that illustrates a concept from the lesson.
- Reverse Game Show. Here’s a fun way to reverse roles between educators and students. At the end of the lesson, ask students to write a game-show-style question to be answered only by a vocabulary word or concept learned in the day’s lesson.
