A King George VI Wedgwood Jasperware Mug commemorating the 1937 Coronation. The Mug is 4" in diameter and 4 1/4 " high. It is 5 1/2" wide (including the handle). It is Royal Blue Jasperware with white bas-relief decoration and a white glazed interior.
The body of the mug with bands of hand drawn slip lettering, 'Queen Elizabeth . King George. VI.' and 'Coronation . May . 1937', further decorated with a crown, an orb and sceptre, shamrocks, a rose and a thistle, 10cm high, painted Walter Moorcroft initials, impressed marks.
The Coronation mug was orignally designed for the Edward VIII in 1936, but after his abdication was adapted for George VI in 1937. The same design with a few alterations was used again for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
