HD South, home of the Gilbert Historical Museum, is located at the southern end of the iconic Heritage District in Gilbert. It opened in 1982 and is housed in the original Gilbert Elementary school, which is the oldest building still standing in Gilbert and the only building in Gilbert on the National Register of Historic Places.
