Qatar officially declared its independence in 1971, with Doha as its capital city. In 1973, the University of Qatar was opened by emiri decree, and in 1975 the Qatar National Museum opened in what was originally the ruler's palace.

Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in 1916 and gained independence in 1971.
