Aug 17, 2020 · Meteora in a nutshell. The Meteora Monasteries are on UNESCO'S World Heritage List since 1989. There were once 24 monasteries and hermitages built on several of these rock pillars, formed by water, wind and extreme temperatures. Only six monasteries are still in use today.
