The first fighter interceptors assigned to Thule were four F-9Abs and began operations on September 11, 1952. In 1957, Air Defense Command took control of the base and initiated the 74 th Fighter Interceptor Squadron (FIS). The FIS was deactivated in March 1960 leaving Thule without interceptor protection for the first time since September 1952.
