Dec 14, 2022 · With this anchor chart, you can teach grade 4s (and other grades) How to write a Summary. What is valuable about this resource is the integration of an example with the guiding points. This makes it especially useful for students.
The kids will be comparing characters, finding the moral/theme, finding the problem and solution, etc. To get them ready for 2nd grade, I am adding in a summarizing component, and this graphic organizer will be great to aid them in that first attempt!
- Questions To Ask While Reading. Questions like these help students think about the purpose of reading itself. They also encourage kids to consider important basics, like setting and characters.
- Story Elements. Going over the key components that make up a story will make your students better readers. They’ll know exactly what to look out for, and searching for these pieces will make reading seem like a fun scavenger hunt.

There are four parts to the summary topic sentence. First, they state the type of writing (article, book, web page, etc.) and the title of the piece of writing they are summarizing. In the example we were using for this anchor chart, we were reading a short article out of a kid’s science newspaper.
