  4. Jan 9, 2023 · Indie folk has long been one of our favorite genres, as nebulous a descriptor as it may be. Take the acoustic instrumentation or structure of traditional folk and the sensibilities of modern...

Indie folk as a subgenre of music is still evolving and emerging. Its roots could be traced as far back as the 1990s when folksingers like Ani DiFranco and Dan Bern-- whose influences were equally split between alternative rock and folk music -- were up-and-coming. Unlike Bern and DiFranco, artists now considered indie folk are mostly large bands. ...

Probably the most well-known indie folk band on the scene these days is the Decemberists, who started on an indie label but are now signed with Capitol Records. They pull largely from the story-song tradition, marrying it with sonic attributes that could be considered both folk and indie rock. Other great indie folk artists include the Fleet Foxes,...

Indie folk bands have no standard setup. They're mostly inclined to play whatever instrument makes sense in a song. That might be a trumpet or clarinet, African hand drums, an accordion or banjo, or electric guitar and computerized drum tracks. Most of the bands, however, are built around a singer-songwriter with an acoustic guitar.

Every musical genre has its essential musicians and albums. If you're new to the indie folk scene, there are a few that will give you a good sense of this style. 1. Fleet Foxes - self-titled (SubPop 2008) 2. Blind Pilot - "3 Rounds and a Sound" (Expunged 2008) 3. Or, the Whale - "Light Poles and Pines" (Seany Records 2007) 4. The Decemberists - "Th...

Several indie labels have opened their doors to progressive folk artists. Most prominent are Hush and Barsuk Records in Portland and Seattle's SubPop Records. Also notable is North Carolina's Ramseur Records.

    • Nick Drake – Pink Moon (1972) Nick Drake’s final album is also his simplest and most grave. Describing this album as “solo acoustic” overlooks the painful extreme to which he stretched the limits of the guitar: string noise and hard plucking on tracks like “Road” and “Know” create a droning, dirge-like atmosphere.
    • Daniel Johnston – Yip/Jump Music (1983) Plenty of narratives—some fair, some unbelievably cynical—have been spun about Daniel Johnston’s short life. His fifth album, recorded in a Texas garage with just a chord organ and Johnston’s lonesome voice, is the gold standard for “outsider” music, but that label now seems inaccurate.
    • Robyn Hitchcock – I Often Dream of Trains (1984) Robyn Hitchcock curries a fascination with the origin of all living organisms and a few dead ones. For many of his most ardent fans, the origin of his mythology is his third, mostly acoustic solo album.
    • Linda Smith – Do You Know The Way…? (1988) Last year, Captured Tracks released a compilation of rare, early self-released material from Baltimore singer/songwriter Linda Smith, bringing to the surface highlights from a scarcely heard but nonetheless stunning, mostly cassette-released catalog.
