The Karl-Theodor Bridge stands alongside Heidelberg Castle, the Holy Ghost Church, and the Haus zum Ritter as one of Heidelberg’s most famous, architecturally significant, and culturally valuable monuments.
Since they were repeatedly destroyed by wars and floods, Elector Karl Theodor had a stone bridge built over the river (1786-1788). On the city side, the medieval bridge gate, part of the former city wall, has been preserved.

It is probably less well known under the name Karl-Theodor-Bridge, although this is actually the official name of the baroque sandstone bridge. Since 1788, the bridge has connected the Old Town with the Neuenheim district on the other side of the Neckar.
Prince Elector Carl Theodor built the Old Bridge in 1786. Although the fifth bridge built over the Neckar in this location, it was the first stone bridge to be constructed. The twin towers on the city side of the river were once part of the city wall, and contain dungeons used for housing criminals.
Built of Neckar Valley sandstone by Prince-Elector Karl Theodor in the 18th century, the famous Old Bridge (Alte Brücke) is one of the last large examples of classical stone bridge building. It links the old town to the eastern edge of the district of Neuenheim.
