Katherine Brandon, Duchess of Suffolk, c. 1534-36, sketched by Hans Holbein (taken from On The Tudor Trail). On this day in 1519, a girl by the name of Katherine Willoughby was born at Parham Old Hall in Suffolk, to parents William Willoughby and Maria de Salinas.
In 1529 she became the ward of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, who sought to expand his East Anglian power base through her inheritance. To this end, Brandon married Katherine as his fourth wife in 1533.
