In March 1944, Germany invaded the country. Suddenly, the entire Jewish population, which had seemingly been safe from the Nazi terror, came under direct German control. Klara and her family were taken from their home on Passover eve, leaving all their possessions behind.
Bloch later recalled that, after Klara's death, he had seen in "one young man never so much pain and suffering broken fulfilled". Decades later, in 1940, Hitler showed gratitude to Bloch (who was Jewish) by letting him and his wife to leave Austria and go to the United States. References
