Jun 28, 2021 · Under AB 832, California will significantly increase cash assistance to low-income tenants and small landlords under the state’s $5.2 billion rent relief program, making it the largest and most comprehensive COVID rental protection and rent relief program of any state in the nation.
The COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act does not prevent a landlord from filing an unlawful detainer action to evict a tenant who poses a public health and/or safety threat to other tenants, but the landlord cannot use the allegation of a public health and/or safety threat as a pretext for evicting a tenant for non-payment of rent.
On March 15, 2021, the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program began to accept applications for rent and utility support, helping Californians hit hardest by the pandemic. Tenants and landlords were able to request up to 18-months in assistance covering the time between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2022.
Mar 22, 2022 · Because the deadline to apply for California's rent relief program is on March 31, 2022, this means that on April 1, these eviction protections put in place by the program are no longer in effect. This is why it's really important to apply for rent relief before the deadline at the end of the month.
