He was the son of the Austrian duke Henry II Jasomirgott and his Byzantine wife, Theodora Comnena, a daughter of Andronicus Comnenus, the second eldest son of the Emperor John II Komnenos.
Liutpold (Leopold) von Babenberg was the son of Heinrich II (called "Jasomirgott"), Duke of Austria and his second wife Theodora Komnene. He succeeded his father in 1177 as Leopold V, Duke of Austria. On 12 May 1174 he married Ilona of Hungary, daughter of Geza II, King of Hungary & his wife, Ievfrosina Mstislavna of Kiev ([1158]-25 May 1199).

A few years later a treaty of inheritance (Georgenberg; 1186) was concluded between the dukes Leopold V of Austria (reigned 1177–94), a son of Henry II Jasomirgott, and Otakar IV of Steiermark, the ailing last Otakar ruler. When Otakar died in 1192, Leopold succeeded him, and thus the Babenbergs came into the inheritance.
Leopold II (1050 – 12 October 1095), known as Leopold the Fair (German: Luitpold der Schöne), a member of the House of Babenberg, was Margrave of Austria from 1075 until his death. A supporter of the Gregorian Reforms, he was one of the main opponents of the German king Henry IV during the Investiture Controversy.
On Leopold V's death-bed, at Graz, he caught all by surprise by granting the Duchy of Styria to Leopold VI, with Emperor Henry VI's approval. None raised objections and thus, Austria and Styria remained divided.
