The university is deeply steeped in a rich and long-standing history; it was founded in 1853, initially functioning as a military academy, and was then changed into a seminary. As with many southern colleges, LSU closed during the Civil War, eventually reopening its doors in 1865 after a four year closure. Today, the university is particularly well-known for its Division I athletics, the LSU Tigers consistently being one of the top teams in the country. In fact, LSU is the only university in the United States with its own live tiger, Mike. The university hosts a collective of landmark buildings, most of which lie cradled along the Mississippi River, like the Foster Hall, the Troy H. Middleton Library and the glorious Memorial Tower. A fine example of skillful architecture and landscaping, the university campus is also a breeding ground of aged oak trees, magnolia carpets and rumbling mounds which have stayed strong over 5000 years.
