Apr 9, 2024 · Nubia is traditionally divided into two regions. The southern portion, which extended north to the southern end of the second cataract of the Nile was known as Upper Nubia; this was called Kush (Cush) under the 18th-dynasty pharaohs of ancient Egypt and was called Ethiopia by the ancient Greeks.
Nubia was divided into three major regions: Upper, Middle, and Lower Nubia, in reference to their locations along the Nile. "Lower" referred to regions downstream (further north) and "upper" to regions upstream (further south).
Upper Nubia is the southernmost part of Nubia, upstream on the Nile from Lower Nubia. It is so called because the Nile flows north, so it is further upstream and of higher elevation in relation to Lower Nubia. The extension of Upper Nubia is rather ill-defined and depends on the researchers’ approach.
History. Lower Nubia lies mainly between the first and second cataracts with some historical overlappings. During the Middle Kingdom, Lower Nubia was occupied by Egypt. when the Egyptians withdrew during the second Intermediate Period, Lower Nubia seems to have become part of the Upper Nubian Kingdom of Kerma.
But many of these early sites lie under the current water level and have proven difficult areas in which to dig. We do know that early agrarian communities existed along the Nile River Valley. These communities were located north of the first cataract (Upper Egypt) and the Nile Delta (Lower Egypt).
