Matthias of Arras (c.1290–1352), sometimes spelled as Matthew of Arras (Czech: Matyáš z Arrasu, German: Matthias von Arras, French: Mathieu d'Arras) was a French architect, famed for his work on St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. Gothic architecture was in its infancy when Matthias of Arras, an eminent architect from France, was called to lead the construction of the most meaningful and esteemed building in the Czech Republic – Saint Vitus Cathedral.
Through a study of the work of Matthew of Arras, the first architect of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague (1342/44-1352), the paper will explore this hypothesis of the paradoxical coexistence of opposing stylistic polarities in the same architect.
