Melchor Gastón Ferrer [1] [2] (August 25, 1917 – June 2, 2008) was an American actor and filmmaker. He achieved prominence on Broadway before scoring notable film hits with Scaramouche, Lili, and Knights of the Round Table. He starred opposite his wife, actress Audrey Hepburn, in War and Peace and produced her film Wait Until Dark.
Ferrer made his screen acting debut in Lost Boundaries (1949). He is best remembered for the role of the lame puppeteer in Lili (1953) and as Prince Andrei in War and Peace (1956) . He directed Claudette Colbert in The Secret Fury (1950) and Audrey Hepburn - his wife at the time - in Green Mansions (1959) .

Mini Bio. Actor/director/producer Mel Ferrer was born Melchor Gaston Ferrer on August 25, 1917, in Elberon, New Jersey. The son of a Cuban-born surgeon and a Manhattan socialite, he went to prep school and attended Princeton University. From the age of 15 he worked in summer stock.

Mel Ferrer was an American actor, director and producer remembered as the first husband of Audrey Hepburn. He co-starred with her in the 1956 film version of ‘War and Peace’. Mel is often described as progressive minded. In order to support himself he started working as a repertoire at the Cape Cod Playhouse, Massachusetts.
