La labor de convertir la Banca López Quesada en Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza recayó en Rafael Moneo entre 1989 y 1992. A diferencia de arquitectos anteriores, Moneo reorientó el edificio hacia su fachada principal de la calle Zorrilla y lo dotó de un gran patio central que organizaba la circulación a base de pequeñas salas, dispuestas perpendicularmente respecto al Paseo del Prado.
