Nabopolassar (Neo-Babylonian Akkadian: 𒀭𒉺𒀀𒉽, romanized: Nabû-apla-uṣur, meaning "Nabu, protect the son") was the founder and first king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, ruling from his coronation as king of Babylon in 626 BC to his death in 605 BC.

He enriched his royal coffers and that of his empire after sacking numerous Assyrian cities in the region, most famously Nineveh, the jewel of the Neo-Assyrian Empire.
Previous Assyrian rulers who had control over Babylonia were recognized as kings of both polities, but Šamaš-šuma-ukīn's father, Esarhaddon, had decided to split the empire between two of his sons, giving Ashurbanipal kingship over Assyria and Šamaš-šuma-ukīn the throne of Babylonia.
