OSTROW MAZOWIECKA (Pol. Ostrów Mazowiecka; Russ. Ostrov Lomzinsky ), town in the province of Warszawa, N.E. Central Poland. The intolerant attitude of the authorities of Masovia prevented the settlement of Jews for several centuries, and it was only during the 8 th century that Jews succeeded in establishing themselves there permanently.
Ostrów Mazowiecka became a part of the Crown only in 1526, along with the entire region of Mazowsze. Meanwhile, the Polish nobility as well as the priesthood attempted to impose a ban on Jewish settlement in the Mazowsze region.
