Whether you’re looking for a fun day with your mini-me (s) or a brag-worthy staycation with a niece or nephew, you’ll find plenty of kid-friendly fun right here within Portland. We’ve rounded up some of the best places to take kids for a day out of the house this winter.

Plan a family outing that includes a day trip to a wildlife park, a visit to one of the state’s many fairs and festivals, or a trip to one of the coast’s sandy beaches where kids can play and cool off in the ocean waves.
- Visit Portland Head Light. Portland Head Light in Maine is a great place to visit with kids. Please plan to stay and play, as this site offers scenic views, outdoor activities, and a rich history.
- Fort Williams Park. If you are visiting the lighthouse, you are a short walk from Fort Williams Park. They recently added an Arboretum and have an abundance of walking trails.
- Children’s Museum. Looking for a rainy-day activity or want a change of scenery? Check out the Children’s Museum in Portland. Interactive play with sand and water is a must-do if your child is a hands-on learner.
- Walking downtown Portland. Portland is a charming city on the water. I would check out the downtown area for an activity. Portland offers some quaint and charming local stores if you have older kids.
- Portland Museum of Art. I probably wouldn’t visit with very little kids, but the Portland Museum of Art is a wonderful place to visit with older kids. This museum, located right in the Arts District of Portland, showcases artwork from notable artists such as Monet, Winslow Homer, Renoir, and Degas.
- Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine. This museum, which relocated in 2021 to Thompson’s Point, is the perfect place to visit with little kids. I checked out the original location adjacent to the Portland Museum of Art and was impressed with all of the hands-on exhibits.
- Casco Bay Lines. Casco Bay Lines operates ferries 365 days a year, so you can ride even if you visit Portland in the winter. There are a lot of tour/ferry options from the Portland harbor, including the following
- Escape Room. During our most recent vacation in Portland, we were looking for a fun indoor activity. The Escape Room Portland is located on Congress Street, right in downtown Portland, and it was the perfect option for us.
