[1] Having converted to Islam from Judaism by the age of 30 in 1277, Rashid al-Din became the powerful vizier of Ilkhan Ghazan. He was commissioned by Ghazan to write the Jāmiʿ al-Tawārīkh, now considered the most important single source for the history of the Ilkhanate period and the Mongol Empire. [2] .
To compile the History, Rashid al-Din set up an entire precinct at the university of Rab'-e Rashidi in the capital of Tabriz. It contained multiple buildings, including a mosque , hospital, library, and classrooms, employing over 300 workers.
The most straightforward of these is the Garden of the Learned (Rawzat uli al-Albab) of Abu Sulayman Banakati (d. 1329–30), a court poet appointed by Ghazan. Banakati produced a prose abbreviation of the Collected Histories, which he completed in 1317, a year before Rashid al-Din’s death.
