On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 18% of 148 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.1/10. The website's consensus reads: "Al Pacino and Robert De Niro do their best to elevate this dowdy genre exercise, but even these two greats can't resuscitate the film's hackneyed script."
Righteous Kill is an acceptable mystery film, and of course, features two great performances from two of the greatest of all time. Righteous Kill, despite having the two leads that it does, is really a director's film, and Jon Avnet cloaks the film in a black blanket of mystery very well.
An overly complex plot, characters who behave illogically, and the hackneyed theme of payback for crimes unpunished spoil the long-awaited pairing of iconic movie stars DeNiro and Pacino. But for some part of RIGHTEOUS KILL, it's worth the effort.
